JAMMU : The Indian Army on Wednesday foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) and shot dead an intruder in Rajouri sector.

“Today (Wednesday) early morning, a suspicious infiltration bid was foiled in Rajouri sector. On being challenged, Pakistan posts in the area opened fired and the Indian Army also retaliated, killing him. His body was handed over to the local police,” said a defence spokesperson.

Sources said a patrol party had observed movement of two persons in forward Keri sub-sector.

“In the exchange of fire, one of them was killed while another managed to flee back to Pakistanoccupied-Kashmir,” they added.

Body of the slain intruder was later handed over to Pakistan army officers via Chakan-daBagh in Poonch.

“The Pakistan army officers had arrived at the meeting point at 5pm and they waited for the family of the intruder, who arrived around 7pm. Eventually, body was handed over to them,” said an army officer.

Meanwhile, Pakistan summoned India’s deputy high commissioner to protest the ‘unprovoked ceasefire violations” across the Line of Control by the Indian forces that resulted in the death of a Pakistani villager.

Director General (South Asia and SAARC) Mohammad Faisal, who is also the foreign ministry spokesperson, summoned the Indian diplomat and “condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian forces along the Line of Control on September 4,” the Pakistan foreign office said in a statement.

“A civilian, Abdul Rauf, embraced shahadat (killed) due to unprovoked Indian firing on civil population in Kotkoterra sector at LoC this afternoon.

The shaheed (slain) individual was grazing animals when targeted by Indian troops,” stated Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), a publicity wing of the Pakistan Army, on its website.

The firing in the Kotkotera sector along the LoC resulted in the death of the civilian on Tuesday, it added. The development comes as United States secretary of state Mike Pompeo arrived on a short visit to Islamabad before embarking on a trip to India.
