TARNTARAN: A man was booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of his 20-year-old wife and cremating her body secretly in Patti, 23-km from district headquarters, here on Sunday.

The woman had allegedly committed suicide on September 10 but the police registered the case on Sunday following a complaint from the deceased’s brother.

The victim has been identified as Manisha Devi while the accused is her husband, Vipul Prashad, of Gartholi village of Sant Kabir Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh.

In his complaint to the police, victim’s brother Chinu Prashad said, “My sister got married to Vipul,23, in May this year. After marriage, they shifted to Patti in Tarn Taran district as Vipul had been working as a labourer in a junk dealer’s shop there. Few days ago, my sister called me and complained that Vipul is physically assaulting her.”

“On September 10, Vipul called me and informed about my sister’s death,” said Chinu.

“I along with my family reached Patti on September 11 and found that Vipul had cremated my sister without informing us,” the victim’s brother told police.

He said they also came to know that his sister committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan as she was upset over her husband’s behaviour.

ASI of Patti city police station, Santokh Singh, said, “Following a complaint from the victim’s brother, a case has been registered under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of IPC against the accused, who is absconding.”
