Four inmates booked for assaulting official at Kapurthala jail

KAPURTHALA:Four prisoners were booked on Monday for assaulting a jail official after he recovered a mobile phone from their possession during a surprise checking at the Kapurthala Modern Jail on Sunday.

The accused inmates are Neeraj of Gurnam Nagar (Amritsar), Malkeet Singh of Tarn Taran (Amritsar), Sandeep Singh of Begowal (Kapurthala) and Parvesh Kumar of Adampur (Jalandhar).

Assistant jail superinten­dent Sushil Kumar said a team of jail officials, including assistant superinten­dent Navinder Singh and gunman Jobanjeet Singh, conducted a surprise inspection of barrack seven.

Jobanjeet recovered a mobile phone, sim card and battery from the barrack.

An argument ensued during which the accused attacked him.

Jobanjeet was rescued by a fellow jail official.

A case under Sections 186 (obstructin­g public servant from discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtheranc­e of common intention) of the IPC and 52 A of the Prison Act was registered.

In a similar incident, members of a rival group attacked and injured gangster, Gurjeet Singh alias Sonu Baba, and his two aides in high-security barracks on July 30. Four inmates were also booked after two groups of prisoners clashed at the jail on March 12.

Jail authoritie­s have also recovered drugs from the inmates on several instances.
