SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE AT STAKE

-

The Supreme Court has struck down the 158-year-old Section 497 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which dealt with adultery. The move of going soft on adultery can destroy the institution of marriage. It will reduce the fear among the masses. Adultery must be considered an offence with men and women equally liable under Section 497 of the IPC. It is essential for the sanctity of marriage. The decriminalisation of adultery is an unwelcome move as it will destroy the institution of marriage. The decision will have negative consequences. The Supreme Court’s judgment has given a green signal to illicit relations. The divorce rates will multiply with the implementation of this decision. The apex court must reconsider its decision on adultery to uphold the sanctity of marriage. Sanjay Chawla, Amritsar

With the scrapping of the adultery law, the Supreme Court has ruled that husband is not the master of his wife. As per our societal standings, a man is considered superior to his wife. Even today women fast for their husband’s well-being. In wake of the apex court’s observations, such patriarchal practices must be strongly discouraged if not banned altogether. Social reformers and the youths must come forward to put an end to such anachronism. Tejinder Singh Kalra, Mohali
