WELCOME SABARIMALA VERDICT
Apropos ‘Sabarimala is now open to all (HT, September 29), the Supreme Court has taken a number of historic decisions, including decriminalisation of homosexuality and scrapping of adultery as a criminal offence, in the past few weeks. With the apex court ruling that patriarchy in religion cannot be allowed to trump pure devotion, the bench declined to accept the practice of restricting women’s entry into temples. Last year, the apex court had ruled against triple talaq. Such verdicts have upheld the right to equality and constitutional morality and will have a far-reaching impact on women’s status in the society.

After decades of struggle and discrimination, Hindu women have finally got their fundamental right to practise religion. The Supreme Court’s ruling allowing women to enter the Sabarimala temple in Kerala will earn India the tag of a progressive nation. The apex court’s ruling that basic fundamental rights cannot be violated on the basis of gender is a welcome step. Ravi Kalra, Kaithal
