INSO, NSUI to protest against student bodies’ indirect polls

-

CHANDIGARH: To demand direct polls in the colleges and universities of Haryana, members of the Indian National Students Organisation (INSO), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) will jointly hold demonstrations at colleges and varsities on October 8 and 9.

INSO president Digvijay Chautala said students were against indirect elections, “but the state government was adamant on it in order to manipulate the polls”.

SFI state president Shahnawaz claimed that only Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students’ wing of the BJP, was in favour of indirect elections. NSUI state president Divyanshu Budhiraja said the students feared that the government will manipulate student bodies’ polls through indirect polls which would set an undemocratic precedent in the educational institutions.

KHATTAR’S TAKE

When asked about the government’s decision to hold indirect student elections in the state, CM Khattar said it should be appreciated as the such polls were being conducted in Haryana after a gap of 22 years. “The Lyngdoh Committee in its report has said that in the first year, indirect elections should be conducted,” he added.
