Sub-inspector hurt in attack, 1 booked for murder bid

AMRITSAR :Police arrested a man on charges of attacking a Punjab Police sub-inspector (SI) with an iron rod, along with his team, at Akalgarh Dhapayia village, 20 kms from here, on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Mandeep Singh aka Ghola of the same village.

The police team comprising SI Mehar Singh, who is in-charge of Nawapind police post, head constable Rajwinder Singh and constable Karamjot Singh were attacked when they had gone to investigat­e a complaint made against the accused by his sister-in-law (brother’s wife) Palwinder Kaur at Akalgarh Dhapayia village. SI Mehar Singh received injuries in the assault.

The accused has been booked under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructin­g public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (voluntaril­y causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Jandiala police station.

The case was registered on the complaint of SI Mehar Singh, who stated that the incident took place around 4 pm when he and his two colleagues had gone to Palwinder’s house to investigat­e on her complaint that Mandeep often physically abused her.

He added that during their probe, Mandeep attacked them. “Mandeep attacked me with an iron rod, leaving me with two fractures in my left arm. Soon, villagers heard the noises and came there following which, the police team arrested the accused.

He attacked me with an intention to kill,” he added.

With the help of the villagers, Mehar Singh was rushed to a private hospital in Amritsar where he is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be stable.

This is the second incident of attack on a police team in a week. On September 28, a police team led-by assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sukhdev Singh of Amritsar rural police was attacked by some ‘drug peddlers’ when the team was patrolling in Pandori village in search of miscreants.
