Army’s intelligence unit arrests soldier in Meerut with ‘contacts’ in Pak

MEERUT: The army intelligence unit arrested a soldier from Cantonment area here on charges of sharing vital inputs with his ‘contacts’ in Pakistan.

The soldier, whose identity has not been revealed, is associated with the Signal Regiment in Meerut, a defence spokesperson said in Lucknow on Wednesday.

The soldier said to have been posted at the regiment for two years.

An army official said, on the condition of anonymity, that the soldier was arrested three days ago and his interrogation was underway to gather inputs about his network and links in and outside the country.

The army official said the arrested jawan was allegedly sharing vital inputs about the army through WhatsApp and other means with his ‘contacts’ in Pakistan.

The jawan belongs to Uttarakhand and, according to the army intelligence unit, he was in contact with his Pakistani ‘contacts’ for over six months.

The intelligence unit received inputs about his suspicious activities a few months ago and all his actions were put under scrutiny before he was arrested.

Superintendent of police (SP City) Ranvijay Singh, said the issue pertains to the army and that the police had no information about any such arrest. “The army has its own police and intelligence, which might have arrested him,” Singh said.
