Neighbour thrashes shopkeeper to death

TARN TARAN: Police booked a 30-year-old man for allegedly killing a shopkeeper for allowing cigarette smoking near his shop at Mari Megha village, falling in Bhikhiwind sub-division.

The deceased has been identified as Paras Lal. Lal had been running a grocery shop in the village for past five years, said police.The accused has been identified as Gursahib Singh who lives near the shop where the incident took place. A case has been registered on the complaint of one Sahib Masih of Marimegha village. Masih said, he along with his friend Dhanwant Singh were standing at Lal’s shop on Wednesday night.

“At around 9:20pm, two migrant labourers (whose identity is yet to be ascertaine­d by the police) visited the shop and took cigarettes from the shopkeeper. After taking the cigarettes, the duo started smoking near the shop.” he said.

He further said, “Accused Gursahib came out of his house, with a stick in his hand, and started thrashing the two migrant labourers who were smoking there. The duo managed to leave the spot and Gursahib started thrashing me and my friend and then went ahead to beat Paras. Gursahib hit him. Lal sustained head injuries following which he died.” He said, “Soon after seeing people gathering at the spot, Gursahib left the spot and we informed the police about the incident.”

After getting informatio­n about the incident, station house officer (SHO) of Khalra police station Gurcharan Singh along with other cops reached the spot and started investigat­ion.

The SHO said, “On the complaint of Masih, a case under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Pena l Code has been registered against Gursahib who is absconding. Efforts are being made to nab the accused.” HTC
