AMRITSAR: As a part of the anti-encroachment drive, the estate wing of district municipal corporation (MC) demolished an illegal building near the police station on Circular Road in the city on Saturday.

A team, led by estate officer Sushant Bhatia, carried the drive under the guidance of mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and commissioner Sonali Giri. MC inspector Kewal Krishan, clerks Paramjit Singh and Kuldeep Singh, accompanied Bhatia during the drive.

“We had secret information that despite issuing a legal notice, an illegal construction was taking place on the MC’s land on Circular Road. During the raid, we found the information to be correct and thus razed it,” Bhatia said.

The team also raided several encroached constructions from Nigam Colony to Gilwali Gate.

“During the raids, it was found that as many as 25 people had encroached and made temporary houses, shops and sheds on the 500 sq yard of corporation’s land between Nigam Colony to Gilwali Gate,” the estate officer said, adding that it was also discovered that an unknown person had sold the public toilet of the area to a woman for ₹1.5 lakh and the woman had started illegal construction there.

“We are searching for the accused who sold the toilet and have issued legal notice to the encroachers. We have given a week’s time to the encroachers to vacate the land. However, if they do not obey the orders, strict actions will be taken against them. We may demolish the constructions too,” Bhatia said.

The drive was also held in other parts of the city, including Hussainpura Chowk, Hukum Singh Road, Nirmal Swamy Road, Gopal Mandir area and Majitha Road.
