JALANDHAR: The rural police on Monday arrested four drug peddlers, including a woman, in different Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases and recovered 5kg opium and 765gm heroin from their possession.

Addressing a press conference here, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Navjot Singh Mahal said that a special drive has been launched against narcotic smugglers and four drug peddlers were arrested in three different cases.

The SSP said, “In the first case, a team led by Lohian police station house officer (SHO) Surinder Kumar intercepted a truck at a check post laid at Phull Kudowal village.”

The truck (PB-03-T-9611), coming from Fukiwal village side, was being driven by 45-year-old Sukhdev Singh of Mandala village in Jalandhar. During the search, police recovered 5kg and 255gm heroin from the driver’s possession, Mahal said.

“During the preliminary investigation, Sukhdev revealed that he has been working as a driver with Balwinder Singh of Killi village in Kapurthala. He told the police that Balwinder used to bring poppy husk from the border areas of Bihar and Jharkhand and then supply it in Jalandhar and Kapurthala,” the SSP said, adding that the driver has been arrested, while Balwinder is absconding.

In another case, police have arrested a 40-year-old woman from Nirankari Bhawan on Sultanpur Lodhi Road, Lohian, and recovered 255gm heroin from her possession.

The accused, who has been involved in the drug trade from couple of years, has been identified as Balwinder Kaur of Shanker Patti Takar village in Nakodar.

Police said the woman, who is already facing four cases in different police stations, brought this consignment of heroin from a lady in Ghungrani village.

The woman’s husband Rajinder Singh, who is also a drug peddler and a proclaimed offender, was also held by Nawanshahr police in an NDPS case on Monday.
