1,250 boxes of illicit liquor seized; 1 held, 4 on the run
MOGA/BATHINDA: Police on Sunday seized 1,250 boxes of countrymade liquor in Moga and Bathinda.
As many as 13,800 bottles of illicit liquor packed in 1,150 boxes loaded in a truck, Scorpio, Safari and a jeep were recovered from Manuke village, 40km from Moga.
The accused, both brothers, were identified as Jaskaran Singh aka Jassi and Gurcharan Singh aka of Manuke village.
A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered against the duo at the Nihal Singh Wala police station. Sub-inspector Nirmal Singh said: “Based on the information given by the patrolling officer, the police impounded the vehicles used to smuggle illicit liquor.” The accused managed to flee,” he said.
Jassi and Jodha are liquor contractors from Baghapurana, 23km from Moga.
In another incident, police arrested a person and booked two of his accomplices under Excise Act after recovering 100 boxes (1,200 bottles) of country-made liquor from their possession.
Accused Resham Singh of Yatri village in Bathinda was arrested by team of crime investigation agency-1 near Shekhpoura village on Monday when he was travelling in a jeep. His aides Lakhbir Singh of Sandoha and Amrit Singh of Maur are yet to be arrested. The liquor consignment was brought from Haryana and was meant to be sold in the area around Maur, said the police.
