CHANDIGARH: Chief minister (CM) Manohar Lal Khattar and his ministers would campaign for mayoral candidates in the elections of the five municipal corporations (MCs), scheduled to be held on December 16 in Haryana.

It is for the first time in the state that the voters would directly elect their mayor, unlike in the past, when the elected corporators of the civic body elected the mayor. The five MCs going to polls are Hisar, Rohtak, Yamunanagar, Panipat and Karnal. The poll results would be declared on December 19.

Considering the political import of the said polls, the chief minister and ministers, besides other party leaders, would undertake canvassing for the party mayoral candidates, media advisor to CM, Rajiv Jain said. The party, which has already received names of 80 contenders for the mayoral polls and over 700 for the corporators’, would announce its candidates next week.

The polls hold importance for all the political parties for being reflective of the forthcoming Lok Sabha and assembly polls due next year.

INLD MOCKS CONG

Meanwhile, mocking the Congress for not fielding candidates for mayoral elections, leader of the opposition Abhay Chautala said in a statement that it was Congress’ ruse to hide its lack of public support.

Stating that former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda was aware that by contesting elections on party symbol, he would expose his claim of having sound support in Rohtak, Abhay said that a defeat in Rohtak would also have weakened his claim of being the tallest leader in his party. Even BJP finds itself in the unenviable position where no one is willing to contest on its behalf, he added.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Haryana, has already announced not to contest the said polls on party symbol but to support individual suitable candidate.
