30 vehicles torched in Jammu rampage, curfew imposed

JAMMU: A curfew was imposed in Gujjar Nagar and adjoining areas of Jammu city on Friday after mobs protesting against the terror attack in Pulwama, which left 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel dead, went on the rampage, setting on fire 30 vehicles and damaging scores of others,the police said.

A suicide bomber driving a car packed with explosives rammed a bus carrying CRPF personnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on Thursday in the worst terror strike during the three-decade insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad, which Indian authoritie­s claim is backed by Pakistan, owned responsibi­lity for the attack.

Jammu district police chief Tejinder Singh said, “A curfew has been imposed in Gujjar Nagar and adjoining areas following violent protests. There was some loss following [these] protests”.

According to local residents, a mob set ablaze around 30 vehicles and damaged scores of other vehicles.

While the protesters were raising anti-Pakistan slogans, another group of people threw stones at them, onlookers said, adding that police then fired teargas shells and caned the crowds to scatter them. “The protesters smashed windowpane­s of some houses,” said one witness.

7 PEOPLE DETAINED IN PULWAMA CASE: COPS

The Jammu and Kashmir police has detained seven persons from Pulwama district in south Kashmir in connection with the deadly terror attack that killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel near Awantipora, officials said on Friday.

The youth were detained from Pulwama and Awantipora during the night on suspicion of links with the planning of the suicide attack, the first-of-its-kind in which a JeM militant detonated an explosive-laden vehicle near a CRPF bus.
