Police, NGOs come forward to extend help to teen victim

JALANDHAR : In a humanitari­an gesture, the Jalandhar rural police have come forward to provide financial assistance for the treatment of a 16-year-old migrant girl, who was sexually assaulted by four youths in Phillaur on Monday.

The victim, who belongs to a poor migrant family, sustained internal and external injuries, including a fracture in leg, when she was assaulted by accused.

“She was taken to a local government hospital, from where she was referred to Jalandhar civil hospital. However, due to the poor financial condition, family of the girl was unable to bear the treatment expenses. Following this, Jalandhar rural cops immediatel­y gave financial assistance of ₹8,000 to the family on Tuesday,” said a senior doctor at the civil hospital.

Her father is a labourer while his mother is a housewife and the victim is the eldest among her five siblings.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Navjot Singh Mahal said, “I have requested deputy commission­er Varinder Kumar Sharma to ask the Red Cross Society to provide necessary assistance to the victim.”

The SSP said Jeevan Aastha, a non-government­al organisati­on, has also lent its support to afford the expenditur­e of her leg surgery. Mahal said that we have also ensured the family speedy trial of the case and harsh punishment to the accused.

The victim was sexually assaulted by four youths here on Monday night.

As per the police, the victim was a friend of Rajiv and he convinced her to meet him at around 10.30pm on Monday and when the girl reached the designated place, Rajiv’s three friends Amit, Bunty and Jatinder, came there and raped the girl.

A day after the crime, Phillaur police arrested all accused, identified as Rajiv Kumar, 18, Amit alias Chetu, 18, Jatinder, 35, and Bunty of Phillaur.
