In Doaba too, voters low on enthusiasm

The Doaba region comprising the Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur parliament­ary constituen­cies saw a voter turnout of 62.27% against 65.97% in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur seats recorded 62.92% and 61.63% voting. In the 2014 poll, the two constituen­cies had 67.21% and 64.74% polling.

Among the assembly segments in the Jalandhar constituen­cy, while the highest votes were polled in the Jalandhar (west) at 65.2%, the lowest polling took place in Jalandhar (Cantt) at 60%.

In the Hoshiarpur constituen­cy, the highest votes were polled in the Chabbewal assembly segment, represente­d by Congress nominee Raj Kumar Chabbewal, at 64.54%.

In the Phagwara assembly seat, represente­d by BJP nominee Som Parkash, 62% votes were polled, 6% less than the 2014 polls.

TURBANS TOSSED AS CONGRESS, AKALI WORKERS CLASH

A clash occurred between the Akali Dal and Congress workers at Langdoi village in the Adampur assembly constituen­cy in Jalandhar where turbans of some Akalis were tossed in the air. The police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

In SBS Nagar and Hoshiarpur, polling remained peaceful.

At Shahpur Patti village in SBS Nagar, a Congress polling agent, Balbir Singh (55) died of a heart attack outside the polling booth when he was about to leave for home.

The selfie corners and red carpet at a polling booth in Jalandhar remained the centre of attraction for the voters, especially the first-timers.
