ISLAMABAD:Alice Wells, US assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, has expressed “concern” over reports of continued harassment of rights activist Gulalai Ismail’s family and the detention of her father, Muhammad Ismail.

Local media reported on Friday that Muhammad Ismail was sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand, a day after his daughter alleged that he was picked up from outside the Peshawar high court by unidentified men.

Muhammad Ismail’s lawyer, Fazl Khan, told local media that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Peshawar had arrested his client after registering an FIR against him under the Pakistan

Electronic Crimes Act 2016.

Khan said his client was produced before judicial magistrate Naveedullah, where the court rejected the FIA’s request for physical remand and instead sent him on judicial remand. He added that they would soon file a bail application.

LAHORE COURT GRANTS BAIL TO AILING SHARIF

As former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s health deteriorated, the Lahore high court granted him bail on Friday on medical grounds. Sharif, however, won’t be free until a request seeking the suspension of his sentence and release on bail in the Al Azizia case is granted by the Islamabad high court, which will hold a hearing on Tuesday.

A medical board has ascribed Sharif’s deteriorating condition to acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a disorder in which the immune system destroys platelets.
