Ggm man pays for mobile phone on offer, receives cheap shoes

GURUGRAM : A 50-year-old man in Farrukhnag­ar was allegedly conned of ₹6,000 after an unidentifi­ed caller offered him a mobile phone for half its cost but instead sent a parcel containing a pair of cheap shoes, police said. The suspect is yet to be identified.

The complainan­t, identified as Ram Kanwar, received a phone call from a man who claimed to be calling from a Chinese mobile phone company. Police said the caller told the victim that he had won an “offer” on a new mobile phone and to avail the offer, he would have to pay ₹6,000 for the phone, which would be delivered to him by a parcel.

“The caller said that the phone would cost half its price as part of the offer. I consulted with my son and agreed. The caller said that a parcel containing the phone would be sent to the post office and I could collect the parcel by depositing the sum,” said Ram Kanwar.

Police said a few days later, Kanwar went to the post office in Farrukhnag­ar and received the parcel. “When I opened the parcel, I was shocked to find a pair of women’s shoes. The shoes were of cheap quality,” he said.

A police officer said before receiving the parcel, the caller had sent a text message to the victim, threatenin­g him that if he refused to accept the parcel, he would be jailed for three months.

“The suspect had told the victim that he was calling from Rohini in Delhi. We are conducting raids to trace the suspect,” said the police official, A case was registered under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of IPC.

2 BOOKED FOR DUPING COMPANY OF ₹1.45 LAKH

Two persons, including a woman, were booked for allegedly causing a loss of ₹1.45 lakh to a company in Udyog Vihar, the police said on Sunday. Both of them used to allegedly work with the company and ‘hacked’ into its private data to steal around ₹65,000.

The complainan­t company is “in the business of handling backend work of its group companies on the offshore model.” Police said the suspect allegedly used the credit account of the company to sell the tickets to the customers. A case was registered under sections 66b and 66D of the IT (Amendment) Act and sections 420 and 120B of IPC.
