A look at how the case, which created a “tsunami of shock” progressed from 2012 to 2020.

2012

Dec 16: A 23-year-old physiother­apy student is gang-raped and brutally assaulted by six men in a private bus and thrown out of the moving vehicle along with her male friend. The victims are admitted to Safdarjung Hospital.

Dec 17: Widespread protests erupt demanding stringent action against the suspects. Police identify the men—bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh Kumar, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta.

Dec 18: Ram Singh and the other three ar ea rrested.

Dec 21: A fifth suspect, a delinquent juvenile, is nabbed from Anand Vihar bus terminal in Delhi.

Dec 21-22: Akshay Thakur, th e sixth suspect, is arrested in Aurangabad district of Bihar and brought to Delhi. Dec 25: The woman' s condition is declared critical.

Dec 26: Following a cardiac arrest, the woman is flown to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital by the government. Dec 29: She succumbs to injuries and other medical conditions. Police add a murder charge to the FIR.

2013

Mar 11: Ram Singh kills himself in Tihar

Jail.

Aug 31: The juvenile justice board (JJB) convicts the minor for gang rape and murder an d awards him three-year term at probation home.

Sep 10: Court convicts Mukesh, Vinay,

Akshay and Pawan of 13 offences.

Sep 13: Cou rt award s death penalty to all four convicts.

2014

Mar 13: HC upholds death penalty to the four convicts. Mar 15: SC stays executions.

Apr 15: SC directs polic etop roduce the dying declaratio­n of the victim.

2017

Feb 3: SC says it would hear afresh the aspect of awarding death penalty . May 5: SC upholds death penalty to four convicts, says the offence created "tsunami of shock".

2018

Jul 9: SC dismisses review pleas of three convicts.

2019

Dec 18: Delhi govt seeks death warrants for execution of death sentence to the four convicts

2020

Jan, Feb: Dates of the hanging postponed from January 22 to Feb 1, then to March 3.

March 2: Hanging stayed. Mar ch 5: Court issues fresh death warrant for March 20.

March 19: Delhi court dismisses the convicts’ plea seeking a stay, SC also dismisses plea by Mukesh, claiming that he was not in Delhi at the time of the incident. March 20: The four me nare hanged at Tihar Jail.
