I&B min steps in to dispel fake news
NEW DELHI: The information and broadcasting ministry on Tuesday formed a Twitter handle in its efforts to curb fake news over the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to an official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, fake news has become a major challenge during the nationwide lockdown imposed to check the spread of the disease, as incorrect information is creating panic. The official said there was a view that the recent rush of migrants from Delhi also happened because of attempts to paint fake news and incorrect information.
As part of these efforts, the Information and Broadcasting ministry formed a special handle on Twitter @COVIDNewsByMIB. “We should not get infodemic while fighting against the CoronaOutbreak. It is important to be updated with correct information on COVID 19,” the ministry said in the first post.
In another post, the ministry sought to bust a myth on disease control. “Does consumption of lemon or turmeric prevent Coronavirus? Answer: No,” it tweeted.
In a related development, the Delhi police on Tuesday, sought to warn miscreants against spreading rumors on social media in the guise of April Fools day, observed every year on April 1. “Please Note: Strict legal action will be taken against any attempt to spread rumours on social media in the guise of #AprilFoolsDay @CPDelhi @LtGovDelhi @DelhiPolice,” a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the South Delhi DCP said.
