DEHRADUN: Amid the nationwide lockdown, Chardham officials said that they would opt for digital worship if the need arises.

The Chardham yatra which continues over a period of six months attracts lakhs of pilgrims and tourists to the state from across the world. Portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines are schedule to open on April 26, portals of Kedarnath shrine on April 29 and portals of Badrinath on April 30.

Deepak Semwal, secretary of Gangotri Dham Committee said that due to the coronavirus outbreak, even if the government does not allow pilgrims to come to the state, rituals will continue as per the traditions. “Our priests will perform the prayers as per traditions even if pilgrims are not able to reach the temples. Opening of portals cannot be delayed as it is done in a particular auspicious time, therefore we will completely support the government and follow all guidelines and ensure that there is no crowding,” said Semwal.

He said pilgrims have the option of booking slot for prayers online, which he claimed was one of the safest options.

“If pilgrims are not able to reach the shrines and they want to offer prayers, then they can book it online and they will be able to see the ritual. We have facilities for digital worshipping and we will use it if needed. We will not be able to telecast rituals performed in the sanctum sanctorum as photography or videography is not allowed there, but pilgrims can see other rituals, especially the opening of the portals,” said Semwal
