SRINAGAR: Police on Friday claimed to have busted a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) module in north Kashmir with the arrest of four militants and five of their associates.

Security forces launched a search operation in Gund Chogal village in Kupwara district’s Handwara area after receiving informatio­n about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

“During the search operation, four terrorists linked to proscribed terror outfit LeT were arrested,” he said.

They were identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Chopan, Mudasir Ahmad Pandith, Mohammad Rafi Sheikh and Burhan Mushtaq Wani, the official said, adding that three AK-47 magazines, 332 AK-47 rounds, 12 hand grenades, three pistols, 6 pistol magazines, 24 pistol rounds were recovered from them.

In another operation, late on Thursday night, security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Shalpora village in Handwara, following informatio­n about the presence of militants there, a police spokespers­on said.

He said three LeT overground workers, identified as Aazad Ahmad Bhat, Irshad Ahmad and Altaf Ahmad Baba, were apprehende­d during the operation.

Two pistols, two hand grenades and some incriminat­ing documents were seized from them. These overground workers were involved in providing assistance to active terrorists and motivating the youth of the area by providing them arms and ammunition to join militancy.

During searches at a check point near Sadiq Colony, security forces arrested the two other LeT overground workers— Waseem Ahmad Gojri and Junaid Rashid Ganie— from Sopore in Baramulla district on Thursday evening.
