AMRITSAR: Punjab medical education and research minister Om Parkash Soni on Monday said that jobs on compassionate ground will be given to the family members of the staff of the state’s Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) within a month in case of death of an employee.

Handing over appointment letters to six persons at Government Medical College, Amritsar, on compassionate grounds, the minister said the medical colleges are playing a key role in treating the Covid-19 patients besides being hubs of virus testing.

“In view of the dedication the employees are showing while treating the Covid-19 patients, their welfare will be taken care of with utmost priority. I have ordered the officials concerned to not delay such appointments,” said Soni while speaking on the occasion.

So far, 1.56 lakh coronavirus tests have been conducted in all the government medical colleges in the state and the facilities and capacities have been enhanced significantly, the medical education and research minister said.

“Whenever the need arises, we seal the area where infections are reported but there is point in shutting the entire Amritsar city,” he said, replying to a query on the rise in positive cases.

“Relaxations are being given to people so that they could earn their livelihoods. But they have to take precautions by maintaining social distancing and wearing masks. The residents don’t need to worry as the situation is under control,” he added.

In view of dedication the employees are showing while treating the Covid-19 patients, their welfare will be taken care of with utmost priority. I have ordered the officials to not delay appointments.
