Highest single-day spike in Punjab, 441 test positive

CHANDIGARH: Punjab on Thursday reported 441 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 11,739. The death toll climbed to 277 with eight more people succumbing to the disease, as per the media bulletin released by the state government. The state government has decided to impose a fine of ₹5,000 on Covid-19 patients violating home isolation norms.

Two people died while 68 tested positive for the virus in Patiala district. Civil surgeon Dr Harish Malhotra said 43-year-old senior assistant of public works department, who was tested positive, died at government Rajindra Hospital. Another 45-year-old Rajpura resident, who had liver ailment history, also died due to coronaviru­s.

Among other positive cases, 23 are from Patiala city, 13 from Rajpura, three Nabha, two from Samana, and 22 from other from different villages across the district.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA from Batala Lakhbir Singh Lodhinanga­l and his son Kanwar Mandeep Singh contracted the infection on Thursday. They have been admitted to a private hospital in Amritsar. Besides, Gurdaspur district reported 15 more cases.

A 77-year-old man from Amritsar died of Covid-19 at the GMCH. The district also reported 36 fresh cases. Twelve new cases were reported in Pathankot district.

Ludhiana recorded the highest single-day spike with 120 positive cases. While 131 belong to Ludhiana, 11 are from other districts/ states. Two women patients also succumbed to the disease on Thursday, but they belonged to Jalandhar and Patiala.

A total 74 persons, including 28 police personnel posted at Nathana police station, tested positive for Covid-19 in Bathinda on Thursday.

Ferozepur reported 15 fresh cases and Muktsar 13 , including eight from Malout town.

Fifty-two persons tested positive for Covid-19 in Jalandhar district, six in Kapurthala district and two Dubai-returnees among in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district.

Eighteen people tested positive for coronaviru­s in Sangrur. Of these, seven are from Sangrur, four from Lehra/Moonak, two each from Malerkotla and Dhuri and one each from Sunam, Sherpur and Amargarh.

Mohali reported one death and 33 fresh cases.
