3 militants killed; army officer, SPO hurt in J&K

SRINAGAR: Three militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Yedipora village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday, officials said.

An army officer and a special police officer also sustained injuries in the gunfight.

The encounter broke out in Yedipora village of Pattan in north Kashmir in the morning after security forces were conducting a search operation in the area. Police said the militants, who were hiding in a house, opened fire on the search party during which an army major was injured.

The army said the officer was taken to 92 Base Hospital and is now stable.

As the gunfight raged, a special police officers also sustained injuries, a police official said, adding the injured cops were evacuated to a local hospital for treatment.

Inspector general of police (Kashmir Range) Vijay Kumar said the search operation was conducted after the police and army got specific inputs about two to three militants hiding inside a house in the area.

Before the operation began, the inhabitant­s of the house were allowed to move out, he added.

Inspector general of police (Kashmir Range) Vijay Kumar said three militants were killed in the operation. “The operation has ended and the police is trying to identify the slain militants,” he said.

Meanwhile, another gunfight broke out in Babhaar area of Pulwama district after militants opened fire on a party of security forces from an orchard, a police official said. The exchange of fire was going on but there were no reports of any casualties on either side till the filing of this report.

Three LeT aides held, grenades recovered

Three overground workers of the Lashkar-e-Taiba were arrested and three grenades were recovered from their possession during checking in north Kashmir’s Pattan area, police said.

Multiple checking points were establishe­d at Kralhar after specific inputs on movement of terrorists in Pattan, a police spokesman said. “During routine checking, three persons were found moving from Zangam crossing to main market Pattan in Baramulla in a suspicious manner.

They were challenged by the personnel at the checkpoint as they tried to flee. They were apprehende­d and three grenades were recovered,” he said.

The arrested accused have been identified as Abid Parvaiz of Andergam, Javaid Hassan Ittoo of Goushbugh, and Jan Nissar Khaliq of Chanderham­a Pattan.
