AMRITSAR : A woman allegedly slit her six-year-old daughter’s throat and tried to burn the body before throwing it into nearby pond at Khayala Khurd village in Ajnala sub-division of Amritsar district, the police said.

The half-burnt body of the victim, Arshdeep Kaur, was recovered from the pond on Monday afternoon.

The accused, Harpreet Kaur, has confessed to her crime to the police saying she killed her daughter in a fit of rage after “she refused to get her hair combed from me”.

The victim’s father, Gurpreet Singh, who works as a granthi at a gurdwara, said he married Harpreet in 2010. They have four children, three daughters and a son, with Arshdeep being the youngest of all, he added.

“My wife was not happy with Arshdeep. On Sunday evening, I went for night duty at the gurdwara. I got a call from home on Monday morning informing me that Arshdeep was missing since morning.

When I asked my wife about Arshdeep, she said she was not aware about it.“When I went to the terrace of our house, I found some half-burnt pieces of a ply board and some scattered soil. I thoroughly searched the house and found that some of the stairs were stained with blood. I also noticed a burn mark on my wife’s hand,” he said.

Sub-inspector Gurwinder Kaur of Lopoke police station said they have registered a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 202 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code against Harpreet Kaur.

“According to the family members, the accused is mentally ill. But our investigation suggests that she is fine as she cleverly made the evidence disappear,” Kaur added.
