Gang of robbers busted; 3 held with arms, stolen bikes

AMRITSAR : The police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of three of its members in the Gate Hakima area of Amritsar city.

Three pistols, two of .315 bore and one of .12 bore, four rounds, three sharp-edged weapons, two stolen bikes and a stolen mobile phone were recovered from the accused.

Those arrested were identified as Jashandeep Singh, alias Vishal of Fatahpur village, Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi of Naushehra Khurd village and Malkiat Singh, alias Baba of Ibban Kalan village in the district.

The gang was active in Amritsar and adjoining districts and committed 13 robberies, including eight at gunpoint, in the last two months, the police said.

Addressing a press conference, deputy commission­er of police (investigat­ion) Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar said they got a tip-off that the gang was roaming in the Gate Hakima area. A checkpoint was put up to nab the accused. We have identified more members of the gang and raids were being conducted to nab them.

He said, “We have traced the eight robberies they committed in Amritsar in the last two months. Efforts to recover the looted items and money from the accused are on. We are also probing where they got the pistols from.”

A case under Sections 379-B (theft by force), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered at the Gate Hakima police station.
