Three self-financed colleges to be made universiti­es

MOGA: The state technical education department has decided to convert three self-financed government colleges into non-affiliated universiti­es from the next academic session of 2021-22.

The department has prepared a proposal to upgrade three institutes Shaheed Bhagat Singh State Technical Campus, Ferozepur; Beant College of Engineerin­g and Technology, Gurdaspur and The Malout Institute of Management and Informatio­n Technology (MIMIT).

Currently, these institutes are battling in acute financial distress and are unable to pay salaries. The developmen­t is an initiative to bail them out.

“It has been decided to provide more autonomy to the three institutes,” said an official of the technical education department.

According to the proposal, the government will bear 60% expenditur­e of these three college and Rs 15 crore each will be given to Shaheed Bhagat Singh State Technical Campus - Ferozepur and Beant College of Engineerin­g and Technology, Gurdaspur while Rs 5 crore to the Malout Institute of Management and Informatio­n Technology.

An official, pleading anonymity, said the institutes can start new course, reduce, increase seats of courses according to requiremen­t. This will help increase the number of admissions and income of college.

Technical education minister Charanjit Singh Channi, said, “It is the need of the hour to upgrade these institutes.
