25 STPs in Haryana not complying with pollution norms

KARNAL: As many as 25 sewage treatment plants (STP) in Haryana have been found non-compliant with the norms of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board, revealed a monthly progress report by the Ghaggar and Yamuna Action Plan of the Haryana government submitted by the HSPCB.

As per the report, there are total 58 STPs installed in the catchment of Yamuna in the capacity of 1062.2 MLD and 10 of these are not meeting the prescribed parameters. Also, in Ghaggar catchment areas, there are total 59 STPs with the capacity of 514.25 MLD and seven are not meeting the prescribed parameters of the HSPCB.

Moreover, 36 STPs of 218.5 MLD capacity are installed in other areas not following in the catchment of the rivers and 11 of these are not meeting the prescribed limits. In Ghaggar catchment area, there is a gap of 13.54 MLD in the installed treatment capacity at present in comparison to the requiremen­t as the sewage generation in some towns in the catchment area, including 4.9 MLD in Ambala and 8.64 MLD in Kalka. Similarly,

in Yamuna catchment areas, there is a gap of 118.68 MLD in the installed treatment capacity at present in comparison to requiremen­t in 107 MLD in Faridabad, 10.06 MLD in Palwal and 0.38 MLD in Indri.

Reacting to the developmen­t, HPSC member secretary S Narayanan said, “Based on the findings, we have issued notices to the department­s, officers and operators concerned for immediate action.” “We will decide the cases individual­ly after learning their explanatio­n as per the legal provisions,” said Narayanan.

As per officials of the HSPCB, there are total 1,540 wards in MCs of Haryana of which, 1,467 have been covered with door-todoor waste collection services. Of all wards, source segregatio­n has been initiated in 1,103 wards. There are three existing operationa­l centralise­d waste-to-compost processing facilities in Haryana in Rohtak (150 TPD), Sirsa (50 TPD) and Karnal (150 TPD).

They said that to deal with the problem of medical waste, there are three bio-methanatio­n facilities operationa­l in Faridabad, Panchkula and Radaur and one bio-CNG plant in Karnal. Also, there are 1,800 compost pits in different MCs and 1,466 pits for horticultu­re waste.
