MOGA : A Ludhiana man was arrested along with three mediators for allegedly trying to sell off his two-month-old daughter for ₹2 lakh in Moga district.

The child is the second daughter of the accused, Avtar Singh, while the first one is two-year-old, the police said, adding he and his wife Rajni were facing financial hardship after he met with an accident three months ago.

The three mediators were identified as Jasveer Kaur of Jagraon, Ranjeet Kaur, and Kamaljeet Singh of Haibowal in Ludhiana district.

The couple claimed that they were also facing difficulty meeting expenses for the two-month-old’s treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.

Deputy superintendent of police (city) Barjinder Singh said, “The couple is struggling to meet both ends meet. Avtar fell from the third floor of a building while working as an electrician. He was the only breadwinner of the family. “First, they spent money on his treatment and then on the newborn. They came to Moga to sell the child late Monday evening.”

Dispute over deal led to arrest

Investigating officer Sukhwinder Singh said, “Initially, the deal was fixed at ₹2 lakh by the mediators. The couple was called to Jagraon where they had a dispute over the price. Then they came to a Moga hotel.”

“The buyer did not come to the spot. We got four-day police remand of the accused to identify the buyer. The child is being treated at the civil hospital as she is ill,” he added.
