4 Balachaur youths drown in Sutlej

SBS NAGAR: Four youths, aged between 17 and 21 years, drowned after jumping into the Sutlej for a bath in Punjab’s SBS Nagar district on Saturday evening. They have been identified as Hardeep Kumar, Sandeep, Happy, and Nitin of Balachaur town in the district.

The four were among a dozen youths who had gone to the river at Aauliyapur village near Balachaur around 3pm. As the four ventured into the deep waters, they got stuck and drowned. The other youths rushed back and informed police.The bodies were recovered with the help of divers.

Lal Bahadur, a local councillor, said all the victims belonged to families of labourers. Happy was the only child of his parents. Police have initiated inquest proceeding­s.

Two teens feared drowned in Yamuna

AMBALA: A day after two 15-year-old boys went missing after they went to take a dip in Hamida head of Western Jamuna Canal in Yamunanaga­r camp area, divers are still trying to trace them.

The teens, identified as Sumit and Saurabh, had reportedly gone to take a dip in the river with their friend Ankush without informing their parents. While Ankush waited on the banks, the two teens failed to return after their swim. A rescue team led by Rajeev, a local, is looking for the bodies.

“With the help of some fellow volunteers, we have checked the riverbank in the area. Now, we are looking in the middle of the river where the flow is fast and sand has settled,” he said. Inspector Sukhbir Singh, Yamunanaga­r city police station in-charge, said the teams are trying to recover the bodies.
