Assets worth ₹12.8 cr of drug peddlers, POs attached in Moga in six months

MOGA : Properties worth ₹12.8 crore belonging to drug smugglers and proclaimed offenders (POs) were attached by police in Moga district in the past six months, officials said.

These assets are linked to 11 drug smugglers and 39 proclaimed offenders.

Now, the police are planning to auction these properties.

Moga senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Harmanbir Singh Gill said to make drug smugglers and POs face the law, they have been working to get their illegally obtained properties, including land, residentia­l and commercial buildings, attached.

The properties of POs were attached under sections 82 and 83 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and those of drug smugglers under section 68F (2) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrop­ic Substances (NDPS) Act with the order of the competent authority.

“As soon as we got clearance from the department concerned, we seized all the properties. The process to auction the properties is on and it will help in generating the revenue for the state government,” said the SSP.

The police have also auctioned a total of 588 vehicles in the last eight months and generated revenue of Rs 1.3 crore, Gill said. The revenue generated from these auctions has been deposited in the state exchequer.

In 2020-21, the district police confiscate­d 185.63 quintals poppy husk, 4.88 lakh pills and capsules, 20.95 kg intoxicant powder, 10.48 kg heroin, 166 cough syrup vials, 272 gram smack, 7.55 kg ganja and 7.5 kg green poppy plants in 664 cases registered, he added.
