NEIGHBOURS SAID MAN HAD TAKEN TO DRUGS AFTER HIS WIFE’S DEATH; INQUEST PROCEEDINGS INITIATED

LUDHIANA: A year after his wife’s suicide, a 35-year-old man killed his eight-year-old daughter before taking his own life at his residence in Jagraon. The incident came to light on Friday morning when the man’s sisterin-law visited the house. Police believe the incident took place on Thursday night as the bodies had not started decomposing yet.

A suicide note, purportedly left behind by the 35-year-old, stated that he was not able to cope with the death of his wife and that he wanted to end his life. He further said he did not want his daughter to be dependent on anyone after his death, so he was “taking her” with him.

As per the neighbours, the man had taken to drugs after his wife’s death. Some of his relatives had expressed concern over his daughter’s well-being and asked him to handover her custody to them.

In the suicide note, the man also mentioned that his in-laws should not be informed about his death, and they should not be allowed to attend his cremation. He also added that his shop, two houses and land should be given to his maternal uncle. He also “apologised” to his maternal uncle for taking the extreme step. Jagraon station house officer, inspector Nidhan Singh said inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure have been initiated and bodies sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination.
