Haryana to evacuate 16 students from Manipur

FIRST BATCH OF FIVE STUDENTS EXPECTED TO RETURN ON MONDAY NIGHT

The Haryana government on Monday said necessary arrangemen­ts were being made to bring back 16 students of the state who have been pursuing higher studies in government-run technical institutio­ns of violence-hit Manipur.

As per informatio­n received so far, five students of Haryana are pursuing education in NIT-Manipur, eight in IIIT-Manipur and three students in NSUManipur.

In the first batch, at least five students, who hail from Mahendraga­rh, Jind, Palwal, Sirsa and Rohtak districts, are expected to reach Delhi on Monday night, an official spokespers­on said, adding that stranded students are being evacuated as per the availabili­ty of flights.

Following inputs that Haryana natives pursuing higher studies were stranded in Manipur, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar took stock of the situation and directed officials to make arrangemen­ts to bring them back at the earliest.

The CM has assured all possible cooperatio­n from the state government and apart from these 16 students, if informatio­n is received about any other student, they will also be brought back safely.

Officials of the CM’s office are constantly in touch with the concerned officials in Manipur and are taking updates of every situation. The chief secretary of Manipur said all students of Haryana are safe and every facility is being provided to them, said the spokespers­on.

5 Himachal students evacuated

: Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s interventi­on saw five Himachali students stuck in the violence-hit Manipur. CM Sukhu immediatel­y responded to the text message of one of the students stuck in Manipur and intervened in the matter.

The chief minister provided a financial assistance of ₹60,000 to help the students stuck in violence to handle the crisis immediatel­y and meet the travelling expenses of the students to return home safely.

He instructed state government officials to take necessary action to bring back the students to their homes in Himachal Pradesh. The five students who returned home were Simran, Sujal Kaundal and Ashwani Kumar from Mandi and Nawang Chhering from Kullu and Keshav Singh from Hamirpur. Three of the students were pursuing their studies at NIT Manipur in Imphal, while the other two were studying at Khumban Lampak Sports Complex, National Sports University in Imphal.

A state government spokespers­on said the students were flown from Imphal to Kolkata and were to reach New Delhi by Monday evening, adding, “The state government is committed to the welfare and safety of every citizen of the state.”
