Union ministers Naqvi, RCP Singh resign from Cabinet

Union ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and R C P Singh submitted their resignatio­ns to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, a day before the completion of their Rajya Sabha term, sources said.This is the first time that sitting ministers are out of both Houses of Parliament.

Earlier in the day, Modi had lauded both Naqvi and Singh during the cabinet meeting for their contributi­on to the country during their tenure, in an apparent suggestion of it being their final cabinet meeting, sources said.

Naqvi, a senior BJP leader, is also the deputy leader of the Rajya Sabha.

Recently, several BJP leaders were elected to Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtr­a, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. However, the party did not give a Rajya Sabha ticket to Naqvi.

Singh who held the post of Union steel minister in the Modi Cabinet is from JD( U) quota.RCP Singh had sworn in as a minister in the Modi government a year ago on July 7, 2021.

The JD(U) did not nominate Singh for the Rajya Sabha in May, raising questions over his continuati­on as a minister amid speculatio­n about his possible defection to BJP.

According to an HT report, Singh may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in three to four months, a spokesman for the party said even as he denied claims that the Nitish Kumarled Janata Dal ( United) attended its national executive meeting in Hyderabad over the weekend.A Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant in Tripura after the resignatio­n of Manik Saha who was recently elected to the Tripura Assembly.

Besides this, there is no Rajya Sabha seat which is going to be vacant in the next few months.
