GURUGRAM: Two men in their early 30s allegedly assaulted and robbed a 72-year-old woman in Faridabad assuming she was wealthy because she often tipped one of them ₹100 when he delivered mineral water bottles to her residence, police have said.

According to police, the incident took place on July 11 when the woman was alone at home in Sector 4, Faridabad.

Brahm Prakash, in-charge of Crime Branch 65 in Faridabad, who arrested the suspects, identified the suspects as Amit Kumar of Bulandshahar in Uttar Pradesh and Raj Kumar Tyagi alias Raju of Ghaziabad. He said that Kumar worked at a mineral water plant in Faridabad and was unhappy with his job .“He used to deliver mineral water bottles in residential areas and the woman would tip him ₹100 thrice a week, asking him to replace the bottle in the kitchen,” he said.

The suspects kept a close watch on her house and on July 11, barged into it as soon as the woman’s domestic help left after daily chores, and Jaywati Sharma forgot to lock the main door of her house. Narender Kadian, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said that Sharma was on a video call with her daughter when she heard someone shouting to show her electricity bills and meter. “Before she could react, they snatched her mobile phone and disconnected her call. They assaulted her and robbed cash , jewellery and valuables from the house,” he said.

Kadian said the woman identified Kumar. Police said they registered a case under various sections of IPC and the Arms Act. They tracked the duo and arrested them from Bulandshahar.
