4 Cong MPs suspended from LS for disruption
Four Congress MPs, including Manickam Tagore, Ramya Haridas, Jothimani and TN Prathapan have been suspended from the Lok Sabha for the entire Monsoon session for their ‘unruly behaviour and disrupting proceedings.’
The MPs were suspended according to Rule 374 on ‘ unruly and disrespectful behaviour towards the Chair.’
The proceeding in Lok Sabha was adjourned till 3 p.m. today amid ruckus and sloganeering by Opposition members over various issues.
The Congress said the government was trying to “intimidate” it, and asserted that the party will not be cowed down.
Speaking with reporters along with the four suspended MPs, Congress’ deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said, “The government is trying to intimidate us by suspending our MPs. What was their fault? They were trying to raise the issues which matter to people.”The Congress party will not be cowed down like this, he asserted.
“The MPs were holding placards raising the issues of rise in prices of gas cylinder, imposition of GST on items such as flour and buttermilk. We moved an adjournment motion demanding a discussion on these issues, but no discussion was held,” he said.
Tagore, one of the suspended MPs, said for the past six days, the Congress has been demanding a discussion on price rise, giving notices for adjournment motion but the government has shown “complete arrogance”.
“Today, when a tribal woman has taken oath as President, a Dalit woman has been suspended from Lok Sabha,” he said. Tagore also alleged that the BJP only wants Parliament to cheer its leaders and its victory.
“We were trying to show placards in the House and place them in the camera angles. They say placards are not allowed in Parliament... what is allowed is only cheering for Modi ji,” he said. Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022 which aims to provide a regulatory framework for India’s research activities in the Antarctic and protect the Antarctic ecosystem.
The Bill was moved by Union Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh. The Bill is intended at having India’s own national measures for protecting the Antarctic environment as also the dependent and associated ecosystem. It also aims to implement the Antarctic Treaty, the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources and the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty.
Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the third time on Monday when the proceedings were suspended till 5 pm after unrelenting protests by Opposition members seeking a discussion on price rise with display of placards.
During a discussion on a bill on the weapon of mass destruction and their delivery systems, Sasmit Patra, chairing the house, adjourned the house after Trinamool Congress member Abir Ranjan Biswas refused to heed to his request to stop showing placard behind BJP member Ajay Pratap Singh.
Patra adjourned the house for 10 minutes till 5 pm.
Both the Houses are witnessing continuous adjournments since the session has begun.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday alleged that there has been no meaningful discussion in the House since the Monsoon session began on July 18 and said that 5 days of parliament were wasted.
“The government has not yet called the Opposition for talks, it is clear that the government is not ready for discussion in the House. 5 days of Monsoon session of Parliament have been wasted,” Kharge told ANI.
