Class 12 student in TN dies by suicide: Cops
In a tragic incident, a Class 12 girl reportedly died by suicide in Tiruvallur district in her hostel room attached to a government-aided school, police officials said. “It’s too early to confirm anything except that it is a case of suicide. We are investigating it,” a senior police official of Tiruvallur told HT.
The 17-year-old girl’s body was taken to the Tiruvallur government medical college and hospital for postmortem. Police claim she reportedly took the extreme step during the wee hours of Monday.
The incident led to protests by a few locals and parents near the school premises amid heavy police deployment.
Deputy inspector general of police (DIG) M Sathapriya and Tiruvallur superintendent of police (SP) Cephas Kalyan were investigating the matter inside the school premises.
This development comes days after the tragic death of another Class 12 girl in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi reported on July 14.
On July 13, a 16-year-old girl reportedly died in her hostel premises of a private school in Kallakurichi. The girl’s parents suspected foul play while police said she allegedly died by suicide. The protests over the girl’s death reportedly turned violent on July 17 when the school was damaged, police and school vehicles were set on fire. Around 52 police officials were also injured in the incident.
The Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID) is currently investigating the case and the state government has formed an Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the directions of the court.
Last week, the Madras high court while hearing the Kallakurichi girl’s death case had ordered that any death inside an educational institution must be investigated by the CB-CID.
The court was hearing a plea by the Tamil Nadu government, seeking direction to the parents to collect the student’s mortal remains and conduct the last rites.
The last rites of the Class 12 girl were performed at her native village in Cuddalore district last Saturday.
Earlier, the ambulance carrying body of the deceased met with a small accident almost 10 km away from Veppur on the Trichy Bypass road.
Both the ambulance and its escort vehicle collided with a container lorry but were then on their way again.
