Light rain lashes parts of J&K

Light rain lashed parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, bringing down day temperatur­es.

The meteorolog­ical centre in Srinagar said that there was overnight light rainfall in various parts of the Union Territory, followed by more later in the day.

A MeT official said on Thursday that summer capital Srinagar recorded 1.2mm rain in the past 24 hours.

“Srinagar experience­d a maximum temperatur­e of 9.8 degreed

Celsius, some three notches above normal,” the official said.

She said that highest rainfall of 7.8mm was seeb in the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir. “The mercury plunged to two degrees Celsius in Gulmarg,” she said.

The southern resort of Pahalgam in Anantnag district recorded rainfall of 5.7mm, with maximum temperatur­e settling at five degrees Celsius.

In Jammu division, Bhaderwah saw rainfall of 3.5mm.

The MeT official said that the intermitte­nt rainfall will continue for the next three days as well. The weather centre in Srinagar cautioned of disruption of road transporta­tion over important mountain passes as two back to back weather systems will bring rains till March 31.

It said that on Friday and Saturday, there will be more intense wet weather. “Light to moderate rain/snow (over higher reaches) is expected at most places during March 29 evening to 30 night,” it said in an update.

There will be thundersto­rms and lightning with possibilit­y of hailstorm and gusty winds till March 30.

Month-end will be cloudy with intermitte­nt light rain and snowfall at few places, followed by improvemen­t in weather from April 1 to 5.
