POLL CODE: 61,472 LICENSED WEAPONS DEPOSITED IN HIMACHAL

State election department on Friday revealed that as many as 61,472 licensed weapons were deposited till evening.

Giving informatio­n, department’s spokespers­on said that the numbers of the arms deposited were 1,020 in Baddi, 4,406 in Bilaspur, 5,259 in Chamba, 3,400 in Hamirpur, 10,309 in Kangra, 1,205 in Kinnaur, 4,479 in Kullu, 205 in Lahaul-Spiti, 6,291in Mandi, 3,455 in police district Nurpur, 1,0671 in Shimla, 4,720 in Sirmaur, 3,557 in Solan and 2,495 in Una. Apart from this, since the imposition of model code of conduct, 53 complaints were received from across the state through C-Vigil out of which 24 complaints were disposed till Friday afternoon, i.e till April 12 and 29 complaints which were either false or were not found genuine were dropped after scrutiny.

Bhagat, who goes by a single name, is one of the many JCB operators and has been working on Beas. He thinks it may take more than two months to dredge the river where maximum damage has been done. “We may be able to complete the work assigned to us before the coming monsoon,” says Bhagat.

Rivers Beas in Kullu may not look the same ever. The most picturesqu­e and enchanting river suffered maximum damage in the floods last year.

In July 2023, a catastroph­ic natural calamity struck Kullu and several other regions of Himachal Pradesh, causing devastatin­g damage to the beautiful river. The incessant rainfall and flash floods changed the course of the river and caused massive destructio­n, completely washing away its banks and all the surroundin­g constructi­ons. The estimated loss was over Rs 12,000 crore, which left the entire state in a state of utter misery and despair.
