They are just like a family!

- (The writer is Class XII student at St Agnes Loreto Day School) Kinza Zehra

Someone, once, said to me, “Pets are just domesticated animals,” to which I replied, “Only to those who do not possess them. To those who do have them, they are not just dogs, or cats, or birds, or rodents — they are family.” Thus, today I am writing this

article to highlight what makes pets different from ‘just domesticated animals’ and what makes them family.

Most of us have had a pet at some point in life, and

know what it means to have an ever-loving, cuddly companion. Thanks to YouTube and other social media, even the people who have never had pets know the joyful aspect of having one. Pets do not just provide a person with company, protection, and entertainment. They shower their owners with unconditional love and affection. Their companionship is undemanding, and it fills us with a sense of purpose, making it easier for even the most despondent of us to get by. They do not care about your looks, or your height, or your weight, or your age, or your financial status, or your race, or your religion, or your colour. They are the way humans should be, but are not; undemanding, undiscriminating, and everaccepting, and this is what sets them apart from humans.

Pets, too, display human qualities! They have striking personalities, emotions and preferences. And while some people might roll their eyes and berate them for this, for people often view animals as mere objects, these are the qualities that draw a pet owner and an animal lover more towards them. They are loyal and playful, as long as they are treated right.

Having a pet and looking after it includes a lot of activities like playing, grooming, walking and cleaning up after their mess. It keeps us active, helping us lead a better lifestyle by providing us with physical and emotional benefits. Walking a dog supplies both, the human and the pet with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction. It repels sadness and loneliness; even if we feel like the whole world is against us, it makes us feel loved and cared for.

They are cuddly, easy to love and talk to, and they provide immense comfort in difficult times. They are goofy and adorable most of the times and many a people who do not own a pet see them just like that, but, as one of my friends said, “They have a lot to give.”
