Waiting for tomorrow!

- Vikas Bhandari

Iwanted to write this column over the weekend, which is when I get slightly more time than the weekdays whence I am working from 8am to 7pm. But somehow, as usual, I just procrastinated. I didn’t write down anything until yesterday for my article today. From Friday last week when it was just the ‘I’ll do it later’ excuse until yesterday morning when it was more like a ‘Aw man, I can’t believe it, I put this off until the last minute!’ kind of a thing; weekend just flew by me as did the Monday and the day after that.

Writing down an article for a humour column within a day is a very challenging proposition, but then I like challenges pretty much. And so, I have chosen to write on something what I’m good at and love to do– yes you guessed it right, it’s procrastination! Besides, they say sooner or later preferably later, every writer has to do a piece on procrastination.

Ok so far so good. Now before proceeding ahead, let me tell you a fun fact about myself, all questions thrown to me that start with the interrogative word “When”, having a “you” as their subject and grammatically connected by using the auxiliary verb/phrase “going to do something” in their main body, mostly end in one word answers from me. That magical, life saviour of a word is “Tomorrow.” Yes and it is also the busiest day of my week ;) Allow me to make it clearer over a few illustrations:

Q-“When are you going to pay the phone bill?”

A-“Tomorrow” Q-“When are you going to wash the car?”

A-“Tomorrow” Q-”When are you going to write

for the column?” A-“Tomorrow” Q-“When are you going to stop saying ‘tomorrow’?”

A-“Tomorrow”

Ok back to my writing... knowing that I had very little time left to submit this piece for the print, I decided to head for a sandwich (I don’t usually write that well empty stomach) to a coffeehouse which is very close to where I stay. I even called over a friend whom I know to be a master procrastinator to help me with his own experiences in procrastination. Sure enough, my friend never turned up that day, even as I implored him to stop procrastinating and reach the coffee shop at once so I could start my scribble on procrastination.

Even the waiter, who overheard me talking to my friend on phone, came over and said, “Sir, I have a problem with procrastination too”. I gave him a look that said, “Oh really! Well then would you mind getting my sandwich (on time)”?

When I thought of writing about procrastination I thought- well that’s me. But it also sounds like almost everyone around does it.

The waiter made me realise that procrastination is a universal thing and that everybody does it “Someday”.

Now I think I’ll need to do some more research on how common procrastination actually is. May be my friend might just join in this time. Maybe I’ll start tomorrow!
