Say it with an EMOJI

- —Pratyush Dayal Misra

From ‘Hey there! I am using WhatsApp’ to a single punctuation mark, WhatsApp statuses have gone through many changes across the globe. While some wish to update cool statements many others prefer to go with the ‘available’ status whereas many like to express with a single emoticon and others still like to quote celebrities. But of late using emoticons instead of a quote is a fast growing trend amongst youngsters.

Emoticons have replaced words and quotes. With recent additions of emojis on WhatsApp, many are trying this variation on their status bars. The upcoming Emoji Movie is the seconding example of the popularity of the trending emoticons.

Lucknow youth too are not far behind in following the new trend.

Shreya Srivastava, a student, says, “Words beguile people. You write for your own self and many mistake it as a remark on them. Using an emoji as a status sets the neutral tone. My present status is the dancing woman clad in the red dress. It tells a lot to the people. I’m fun, I like to dance, I’m having an optimistic attitude and I’m moving on. One emoji says it all for me.”

Miscommunication happens when ambiguity prevails. To avoid such an occurrence, many of prefer to keep an emoticon as a status.

Another Abhay Rai shares a similar stance. Finding the emoticons as a ‘endearing expression of self ’, Abhay adds, “WhatsApp provides us with so many adorable emoticons. My display picture with my dog goes best with the pup emoticon. On a sullen day, I put the thunderstorm emoji. You don’t need to write sentences, to which again there is a restriction, about your mood. Just an emoticon summarises it. If at a party or one is in a mood to party, a cocktail drink emoticon serves the purpose.”

For management professional, Reema Nagar, it is all about being short and crisp, “Today brevity is the spice of life and emoticons go a step ahead in conveying the real spirit of oneself. Instagram and Facebook, give the space for detailed expressions to the users, but with the 139-character limit of the status, the expression still gets curtailed. Youngsters find emoticons as the best way of staying precise yet real. Statuses are the instant depiction of your situation and emoticons serve that concise need,” she says.
