Pleasures of late rising

- Vikas Bhandari

Though scientists have recognised that there are indeed a sleepless elite that can run on a small amount of sleep, chances are that you’re not one of them, so stop telling yourself that you will get up early.

I for instance at bed time tell myself that I shall get up early in the morning to do something important, only to spend a lot of my morning time convincing myself that it’s not important. Basically I and “dawn” do not get “along”. I need a bed with an eject button. Whoever said “Rise and Shine” must have actually meant “Rise and Whine”!

Waking up at an unnatural and unearthly time for you can cause sleep deprivation. When you are tired, you lose productivity. You become more irritable and inattentive.

Let me recount to you the benefits that only the late riser can preview — For starters, you don’t move around feeling jet-lagged whole day long the way you would if you got up too early, also if you get up in the wee hours, you are tired by the time it is late noon the time when most office work is generated... especially on Fridays.

So even though the early risers have great advantage of utilising the wee hours, a few hours after waking both early and late risers perform their tasks equally well, but ten hours after waking, it’s the late risers that gain a significant advantage over the early risers and retain it for the rest of the day with some night owls turning most creative late into the night.

Lunchtime is like a light year away. For the early risers, hunger kicks in at 11am. Every second feels like an hour and all your thoughts are dominated by the desire for a tuna sandwich...on the other hand a late riser only has to wait a few hours before its lunch time, in fact it’s even better if you sleep till lunch time that way you can save on the breakfast money too...isn’t it?

Psychologists say, that the morning dreams are more likely to come true, so...sleep more to dream more, after all don’t they say that it’s our dreams that give us hope.

You are more likely to procrastinate if you are a morning person, since you are more prone to say this to yourself at night - “Ahh! It’s my bed time, I will just hit the bed for now and finish all this work at 4 am in the morning”. Mister that work should have been done the night before but you procrastinated and didn’t get it done until another day. Late risers don’t have that option for obvious reason.

Lastly, early rising means ‘less socialising’ — to get up early you need to sleep early (Period)!
