An app for everything!

- Vikas Bhandari

Not long back Apple had come up with the tag line-“there’s an app for that”.

Yesterday while having coffee at a popular joint in Connaught Place a very interesting thing happened, while in queue I found that the guy ordering ahead of me had an app of the coffee store on his mobile. It set me thinking how over a short span of just a few years, the notion of apps has transformed from mere novelty to an essential part of everyone’s life. Err…did I say essential!

As if it was already not difficult to keep up with six different social media platforms that millions of apps are now available online on app stores and more are being churned out by the day…you can safely bet that a few nerds are busy making an app for sending emojis that disappear every 10 seconds or an app that could tell you how you would look in five years, even as you read this!

Want a ride, food, entertainment, a service, online shopping, furniture or even a house all that you ever need is a credit card and a phone equipped with apps. But there is a flip side too….yes haven’t we been constantly complaining of a perpetual lack of storage space and poor battery life of our mobile phones…the cause is “apps” and chances are that you already know it. Apps occupy storage space and siphon off battery power, yet we are liberal in downloading apps, after all who doesn’t want to know how they would look five year hence. But what would you say about an app called “Battery Charge” and I wish it was different from what I am going to say now, but no it isn’t…apparently it only tells you how much your phone battery is charged, just like it tells you at the top corner of your phone screen without even touching some fancy icon…now how innovative is that! Similarly what’s the point of having an app on your mobile if you still need to stand in a queue and order your coffee… beats me!

And if a thing is of everyday utility then understand that removing the app does not mean that you cannot access the service, e.g. Facebook. Most services and e-com companies have a equally good mobile website that can be accessed using the web browser of your phone.

So just remove unnecessary apps on your iOS devices(or Android phones). Instead go to the website in the browser and just create a shortcut to your home screen. It will not lap up your phone battery or storage and Voila! One tap and it opens like an app.
