Ayushmann says he is a ‘hardcore realist’

- Prashant Singh

A‘joy ride’ is how actor Ayushmann Khurrana likes to describe his five years in Bollywood. While his debut film, Vicky Donor (2012), was a success, other films such as Nautanki Saala (2013), Bewakoofiyaan (2014) and Hawaizaada (2015) did not do very well. Was that period scary? “Not really. Maybe because I’m the kind of person who doesn’t have a lot of expectations anyway. I’m a hardcore realist,” he says

Ask him what kept him going with confidence, and the actor says, “If you are an intelligent person, you will be like a realist or an optimist. So, you will always be like, ‘pata nahi iska kya hoga, but jo hoga theek hai dekh lenge.’ I think that’s a good attitude to have in life and since I am a realist, I think it was a joy ride. I always think that success is a lousy teacher but failure is your friend, guide

and philosopher. That’s what I always believed in. At the same time I’m fortunate enough to give two National Award-winning films: Vicky Donor and then Dum Laga Ke Haisha (DLKH; 2015).”

This year is packed with work for Ayushmann. Any nervousness about the films? “Mujhe compensate karna tha do saal ka... It’s unfortunate that Manmarziyan didn’t happen, else I would’ve had a film last year itself. But I am glad that three [of my] films are releasing this year.”
