‘SANDEEP FELT VERY GUILTY ABOUT BETRAYING HIS WIFE’

- Kavita Mungi, mental health counsellor (Names in the story have been changed to conceal their identity )

Smita and Sandeep were college sweethearts and married with their parents’ consent. He worked as an engineer in an automobile company, while she was working with the IT field. They had a girl and a boy. To an outsider the couple looked like an ideal family. Then, suddenly, Sandeep lost his job and took over the domestic duties. Smita started taking up more work so as to help with finances to raise their children. This meant more late hours and sometimes even staying back in office to complete projects and meet deadlines. Ameesha and Jai, a young couple with no kids, stayed next door. Jai travelled a lot. So, at times, Ameesha came over to play with the kids. She was young and attractive. Both were lonely and missing their spouses. They began to spend a lot of time together. Though Sandeep felt very guilty about betraying his wife, he could still not stop himself from getting into an extramarital affair with Ameesha. When Smita got to know about it, she was shattered and wanted to break up with Sandeep. But, he said he loved her and that the affair was a mistake, a temporary infatuation. He sought forgiveness and begged her to give their family a second chance. They came for counselling and therapy to me. Later, Sandeep found work again and they changed their residence. Ameesha still texts him once in a while. Sandeep hasn’t been able to break ties with her completely, but he is working on it.
