The actor and her husband Daniel Weber have just adopted Nisha, ending a wait of two years

Meet Nisha Kaur Weber, the 21-month-old who is lighting up the life of actor Sunny Leone and her husband Daniel Weber. The baby girl, born in Latur, Maharashtra, has been adopted by Sunny and Daniel, and the actor says that it was love at first sight.

“I think the moment we got the picture [of Nisha], I was so excited, happy and emotional,” says Sunny. “We literally had just three weeks to finalise everything. Usually, people get like nine months to prepare [for parenthood]. For us, it was like, ‘Oh, wow, it’s happening, we applied [for adoption] almost two years ago and now, it’s here.’ We have been so ready for so long.”

The arrival of Nisha in their life marked the end of two years of paperwork, and Sunny jokes that the couple didn’t decide when to have a baby, rather “the Indian government and the [adoption] agency decided when we were ready”. Daniel adds that there’s no specific “right time” for an entertainer to have a baby, “because you’re always on the road”. As for why they’ve adopted, it’s a “different reason”, but they were ready two years ago. Sunny says, “I truly believe that Nisha chose us; we didn’t choose Nisha.” The name is the baby’s own. The couple thought of changing it, “but she is who she is. Every time we called her by other names, it just didn’t fit her,” says the actor, whose Punjabi lineage is reflected in ‘Kaur’. She looked up the name of her new daughter, and found that it’s “the name for the Hindu goddess of the night”.

The actor adds, “I do believe that God brings people to you and does things for you, when you’re ready for it. Maybe, we weren’t ready a year ago. And you know she’s coming to us at 21 months, which means she is mobile [and] is going to be able to communicate with us.”

As of now, the baby and the parents are getting to know each other. “It has just been a few days, so we both are still figuring her out, and she is figuring us out, too… Things are changing every hour,” says the new dad.

The new mom is delighted with her baby’s smile — like every new mom everywhere. “She is so cute,” says a doting Sunny. “She looks up at you and smiles, and it just melts your heart. Then, I don’t want to do anything else.” A baby is a “huge responsibility”, but the couple has been ready for it “physically, mentally, financially and every way”.

Sunny says, “We were like, ‘We want to start a family and this is the way that it’s going to start,’ so it’s amazing.”
