‘My son can’t watch my films; they’re not for kids’

While actor Emraan Hashmi has a deal in place with his wife — she gets a luxury bag for every film where he has an on-screen kiss — his son Ayaan, 7, has barely watched any of his father’s films. Why? “He can’t,” says Emraan. “Censor rating for my films have mostly been A or U/A, so none of them were fit for him to watch in a theatre. He’s in that age where even a YouTube is on the restricted mode, so it’s not so easy for him to dig out and watch my films.

He recalls that Mr X was his only film to be given a U certificate, and “so, my son has seen parts of that film”.

The actor has worked in films such as Murder (2004), Zeher (2005), Jannat (2008), and Raaz (2009) — most of them are erotic thrillers.

Emraan reveals that his son didn’t even know for the longest time what his father really does. “When he was four, he was very confused with the whole concept of shooting. He was learning and discovering new words every day and when he found the word ‘shooting’, he thought it has something to do with guns. He got more confused because when we took him to a film set, there was an action scene that I was shooting where I was firing a gun. So, he couldn’t understand what was happening,” recalls the actor. It was much later that things became clear to Ayaan.

Asked if he wishes that he had done at least a few films that his son could watch, Emraan quips, “I’d love to do some of those. But I’m waiting for that kind of a script. I’d definitely want to do a film only for kids, but it has to be worth my time.”
