Time flies!

- Vikas Bhandari

Friends it’s quite well known that from the standpoint of a clock or calendar, each standard temporal unit is exactly the same- Every minute contains 60 seconds; every day contains 24 hours; every year contains 365.25 days and so on.

Yet, sometimes just a few minutes may seem to last “forever” especially when we’re waiting for that light to turn green… phew! And then there are times when time seems to fly, firing on all its cylinders, it passes before you can even snap your fingers… happens with me every time I am digging on my KFC Zinger!

Albert Einstein once noted: “An hour sitting with a witty person on a park bench passes like a minute, but a minute sitting on a hot stove seems like an hour.” I am not sure whether he actually attempted the latter part of his statement though.

Likewise, sometimes it seems to me that only 10 minutes have gone by when in reality TWO HOURS! Have passed by and then I feel like I haven’t accomplished what I ought to in as much time. At other times, I blink, and it is a week later, and it’s as if the last weekend had just gone by yesterday and I have no memory of the week before either!

Does it happen to you too and does it seem to you like time doesn’t give you a break and just keeps running or ticking away too fast?

Or is it that we are on a holiday or simply happy and enjoying ourselves and that’s when the time just pulls open its wings and flaps them a little harder and faster! Moments become Memories in no

time.

Not really, not all enjoyable time flies by at the same speed. For example, last week I read somewhere that researchers believe that simply being happy and content will not necessarily make the time seem to pass more quickly. However, they say if you’re engaged in an activity or pursuit that is more focused, then time really does fly. Sounds all the logic to me especially since I always devote my holidays practicing focused… rest!

Perhaps that’s life; the more you want it to slow down the faster it goes, the more you want it to speed up the slower it gets.

So it is important enjoy the quieter moments in life, when nothing is happening… yes that’s the most important time, when nothing is happening. Every day, I sit completely still and I do nothing, sometimes spending minutes at it… sometimes even hours. People call it wasting time; I call it Nirvana… enlightened meditation!

But fast or slow, time does fly; fortunately the good news is that we are its pilots!
